Rideshare Services Need Improved Safety Elements

Many people use Uber and Lyft as a convenient and accessible way to get to their destinations safely. To meet the demand for these riders, an estimated two million people drive for Lyft, and Uber has more than seven million drivers. If you are a driver in Dallas, you will need to be approved and have a background check done to ensure the safety of your riders. But what is done to protect the drivers from dangerous passengers? In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX, catastrophic injury attorneys discuss a recent rideshare incident where an Arlington man was kidnapped and forced to drive to Florida by a passenger.

Dallas Rideshare Driver Forced To Go To Florida By Rider

Recently, a Lyft driver in Arlington picked up a passenger assuming this would be a regular ride. In a scary change of events, the rider produced a gun and threatened to tie the driver up. After pleading with the rider, the driver followed orders to head to Florida. Thankfully, the victim was able to get help and authorities were called once they reached Florida. While this is a frightening incident, rideshare incidents are more common than we would like to believe.

Brogdon Says Rideshare Calls For Safety Improvements

While Lyft drivers must undergo background checks, driving record checks, and other requirements before they are eligible to drive for the company, riders do not have many requirements. Drivers may be able to rate their passengers, but there are very few requirements currently in place to be a passenger. Quentin Brogdon weighed in on this case, stating “unfortunately, I was not surprised. It’s another in a pattern of crimes committed either by Uber or Lyft drivers, or against Uber and Lyft drivers.” Brogdon believes that more safety implements need to be put in place to protect both drivers and passengers using rideshare services. This specific kidnapping situation is unique, but it is one of many incidents under the umbrella of rideshare incidents.
