In a previous community blog post, we discussed the Baltimore Bridge accident that took place Tuesday, March 26th and its effects on the individuals and families involved. Only weeks later, a barge slammed into a bridge pillar in Galveston, causing an oil spill in the water. In today’s community blog post, your Dallas, TX catastrophic injury attorneys take a closer look at this accident, discuss what happened and who was affected, and shed some light on the importance of personal injury law in catastrophic injury matters.
What Happened?
On Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at about 9:50 am, the bridge leading to Pelican Island north of Galveston was struck by a barge when high tide and currents caused a fuel storage operator to lose control of two barges. One barge hit the bridge and two telephone poles, knocking one man from the vessel into the water. Fortunately, he was quickly recovered and not injured.
The accident resulted in an oil spill, causing 6.5 miles or 10.5 kilometers of the waterway to be shut down in an effort to contain and address the issue. It goes without saying that the potential damage to the environment, including the waters and marine life, are also important to keep in mind when determining if there is a viable personal injury claim present. Who Was Affected?
Although there were no reported injuries, this incident led to the island becoming inaccessible to traffic for quite some time. In addition to the environmental and residential impacts, accidents of this nature have potential to affect the population in larger ways as well. If injuries were to occur, there are several areas to be investigated. These include checking to see if the vessel and maintenance are up to code, if the operator could have avoided the accident, and more.
